Economy and Climate

Agriculture is the major contributor to the country’s GDP and provides a livelihood for over 80% of the population. The country is endowed with important minerals such as diamonds, gold, bauxite, rutile and iron ore which also form a substantial portion of export earnings.

Sierra Leone’s mountains, marshland, coastal plains,wildlife, beautiful islands, long beaches and  historic architecture makes its tourism industry a promising and potential contributor to the socio-economic development of the country.

The country lies on the path of the South West Monsoon winds which blow north from the Atlantic Ocean. The influence of the South West Monsoon results ina  pronounced wet season lasting from May from October. The dry season lasts from November to April with temperatures averaging around 26C (85F). From December to February, The North East Trade winds blowing South from over the Sahara Desert bring a cold and dry influence characterised by fog. This is the harmatan.
